Franklin is a small Simpson County town on I-65, 18 mi south of Bowling Green and about 40 mi north of Nashville. It is a one-night stop or a lunch break, not a base: the draw is a compact courthouse square, a large cluster of antique malls, a Civil War museum in an octagonal house, and Kentucky Downs, the country's only all-turf race track, which runs live in September. Most travellers pass through on the way to Mammoth Cave or Nashville.

You need a car. The town is spread along US 31W and KY 100 with no useful bus service; the square, the antique malls and the motels are 2–5 mi apart. I-65 Exits 2 and 6 are the two access points. Parking on and around the square is free.
