Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.
Ludwigshafen is an industrial Rhine city of about 178,000 people, facing Mannheim across the water and dominated by the BASF works. It has one strong museum, a river island for walking and a shopping mall, but most travellers use it as a cheaper bed next to Mannheim or as a stop on the way to Speyer and the Palatinate wine villages. Two nights covers it; one is enough if you only want the museum.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Trams and buses run from early morning until late night and cross the river to Mannheim; Berliner Platz is the main interchange and Ludwigshafen Mitte the useful S-Bahn stop. Buy a VRN single or day ticket from a machine or app before boarding, and validate it. The city is flat and walkable along the Rhine, and a bike is a good option for the Parkinsel and the riverbank path.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
City centre around Berliner Platz
Tram hub, walk to the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum and the Rhein Galerie; best for a short stay without a car.
Ludwigshafen Hauptbahnhof area
Regional trains and taxis; fewer buses than Berliner Platz, so check your line before booking.
Hemshof
Older district north of the centre with cheap eats such as Maffenbeier; plain streets, lower prices.
Mannheim side (across the bridge)
Mannheim's centre, bars and station are 10–20 min by tram from Ludwigshafen; many travellers sleep there instead.

Watch out
Safety
- Intercity trains do not stop in Ludwigshafen: change at Mannheim and take the S-Bahn or a tram.
- The BASF site is a working industrial plant with its own rules and visitor procedures; do not wander in unannounced.
- The main station is poorly connected to some bus lines: use Ludwigshafen Mitte or Berliner Platz instead.
- Parts of the centre are quiet and poorly lit at night; stick to lit main streets and take a tram or taxi after dark.
- Check the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum's current opening days and prices before you go.
