Ludwigshafen is an industrial Rhine city of about 178,000 people, facing Mannheim across the water and dominated by the BASF works. It has one strong museum, a river island for walking and a shopping mall, but most travellers use it as a cheaper bed next to Mannheim or as a stop on the way to Speyer and the Palatinate wine villages. Two nights covers it; one is enough if you only want the museum.

Get around
Trams and buses run from early morning until late night and cross the river to Mannheim; Berliner Platz is the main interchange and Ludwigshafen Mitte the useful S-Bahn stop. Buy a VRN single or day ticket from a machine or app before boarding, and validate it. The city is flat and walkable along the Rhine, and a bike is a good option for the Parkinsel and the riverbank path.
