The City of Hawkesbury is a semi-rural wedge of outer northwest Sydney where colonial New South Wales started: Windsor and Richmond were settled in 1791 and 1794, before the suburbs reached them. Most visitors come for a half-day of sandstone, graveyards and river flats, or as a gateway to the Blue Mountains on Bells Line of Road. Public transport is thin, so a car or a train-plus-walk plan decides the trip.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over a large rural area and buses are few. Trains on the T1 Western and T5 Cumberland lines run from central Sydney to Windsor and Richmond roughly every 30 minutes. Local buses loop Windsor, Richmond and Kurrajong; the Richmond–Bilpin bus runs only a couple of times in the afternoon, so check times before relying on it.

Low crime, high heat and fire risk. The real hazards are summer bushfires, unsealed rural roads at dusk and kangaroos on the road after dark.
