IndioIndio, California

Give Indio 1–2 nights only if you are here for a festival or a date shake; otherwise sleep in Palm Desert and drive in.

Indio is the eastern end of the Coachella Valley, 33.72 N 116.23 W, about 2 h by car from Los Angeles on I-10. It is a desert city of roughly 76,000 people, known for the Empire Polo Club festivals, date gardens and the county fairgrounds. Summer highs pass 40 °C, so most visits land between November and April. Two nights covers the town; the festivals need three to four.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

SunLine buses 1, 6 and 8 serve Indio; fare is $1 plus $0.25 for a transfer or $3 for a day pass, and only route 1 runs often. Taxis are metered at roughly $2.50 plus $2.96 per mile, so a run to Palm Springs is expensive. The valley is flat and has bike routes, but distances between towns are long: a car is the practical choice.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 30–40 min

I-10 west, about 40 km (25 mi)

Aerial tramway, mid-century architecture and the airport; pair it with an evening downtown.

Palm Desert

go

Door to door: 20–25 min

Highway 111 west, about 20 km (12 mi)

Best shopping and restaurant cluster in the valley; easy half-day.

Salton Sea

caution

Door to door: 45–60 min

Highway 111 south-east past Coachella

Odd shoreline stops and Salvation Mountain; go early, bring water, no services.

Idyllwild

go

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

Highway 74 up the San Jacinto Mountains

Pines and cooler air; carry chains in winter.

Blythe

skip

Door to door: 1.5 h

I-10 east, about 145 km (90 mi)

A fuel and food stop on the way to Arizona, not a day out.

Desert Hot Springs

overnight

Door to door: 45–55 min

I-10 west then Highway 62

Hot-spring spas; better as a night than a return trip.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Indio Blvd / downtown

Motels and the Greyhound stop; walkable to the history museum, cheapest beds.

Highway 111 strip

Chain hotels, car rentals and the transit centre; you need a car for everything.

Indio Springs / Fantasy Springs

Casino resort and golf; quiet, drive-only, good for a festival shuttle base.

Palm Desert (next town west)

More rooms and restaurants 15–20 min away; use it if Indio is full during festivals.

Watch out

Safety

Indio is a normal desert city: the real risks are summer heat, long unlit drives between towns and festival crowds. Lock the car, keep water in it, and do not walk the highway strips after dark.
  • Summer heat: plan indoor or early-morning activity from June to September and carry water.
  • Festival weekends (April and the polo season) fill every bed in the valley and double room rates.
  • Distances between Coachella Valley towns are long; a taxi from Indio to Palm Springs is a large fare.
  • Wind and dust storms can close I-10 for hours in spring; check conditions before driving.
