Indio is the eastern end of the Coachella Valley, 33.72 N 116.23 W, about 2 h by car from Los Angeles on I-10. It is a desert city of roughly 76,000 people, known for the Empire Polo Club festivals, date gardens and the county fairgrounds. Summer highs pass 40 °C, so most visits land between November and April. Two nights covers the town; the festivals need three to four.

SunLine buses 1, 6 and 8 serve Indio; fare is $1 plus $0.25 for a transfer or $3 for a day pass, and only route 1 runs often. Taxis are metered at roughly $2.50 plus $2.96 per mile, so a run to Palm Springs is expensive. The valley is flat and has bike routes, but distances between towns are long: a car is the practical choice.
