Shingu新宮市

One day for Kumano Hayatama Shrine and Kamikura Shrine; two if you add the castle and a waterfall. Not a base for the full Kumano Kodo.

Shingu is the eastern gateway to the Kumano Sanzan UNESCO World Heritage site, home to Kumano Hayatama Shrine and the dramatic Kamikura Shrine. The town is compact and walkable, with a castle ruin, a top-100 waterfall and the birthplace of Aikido. Most travellers pass through in a day or stay one night before hiking the Kumano Kodo.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Shingu is safe. The main risks are slippery paths at Kuwanoki Falls and the steep steps at Kamikura Shrine; take care in wet weather.
  • Last trains from Shingu to Osaka and Nagoya leave by late afternoon; check the timetable.
  • Kuwanoki Falls is a 15-min bus ride then a short walk; the path can be slippery after rain.
  • Kamikura Shrine involves climbing a steep stone staircase (about 500 steps).
