Give Tarifa 2 nights if you kite or want the old town; 1 night is enough if you are only here for the ferry to Tangier.
Tarifa is mainland Europe's southernmost town, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and Africa sits 14 km across the Strait of Gibraltar. It is Europe's biggest kitesurfing base, but the walled old town, the castle and the wind are the whole trip: this is a small town, not a city break. Two nights covers the old town, a beach afternoon and one wind-or-sea activity; add a third if you are taking lessons or crossing to Tangier.

Getting around
The old town is small and walkable; you do not need a car inside it. For Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and Bolonia you need a car, taxi or the local bus. Buses to Algeciras, Cádiz, Jerez and Málaga run from the town, and the ferry to Tangier leaves from the port.

Safety
- The Levante wind can blow hard for days: it closes ferries and some boat trips, and it is not beach weather.
- Ferry and whale-watching trips only run when the sea is calm; build a spare day into any Tangier crossing.
- Parking inside the old town is almost impossible; use the edge-of-town car parks.
- Summer accommodation sells out weeks ahead and prices jump; book early.
