Give Norfolk 2 nights as a Hampton Roads base: museums and the waterfront downtown, Ghent for food. Skip if you only want the beach — that is Virginia Beach.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Norfolk is a working Navy port and Virginia's cultural centre, with the Chrysler Museum, a battleship you can walk through and a compact downtown on the Elizabeth River. It is not a beach town, though Ocean View on the Chesapeake Bay has sand 15 minutes from downtown. Most visitors use it as a 2-night base for Hampton Roads, pairing it with Virginia Beach or Colonial Williamsburg.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown and Ghent are walkable. The Tide light rail runs from the Virginia Beach border through downtown to Sentara, and HRT buses cover the rest; a single ride is $2 and an all-day pass $4.50, valid on buses, the Tide and the Portsmouth ferry. Bring exact change — drivers and ferry crew do not carry cash. Driving is only worth it for Ocean View, the botanical garden or day trips; downtown signage is poor.

Ghent

Historic streets, Colley Avenue cafés and boutiques; 5–10 min by car or a 25-min walk from downtown.

Ocean View

Chesapeake Bay beach and cheaper motels; 15–20 min drive north of downtown, thin on nightlife.

Airport / Military Highway

Chain hotels for early flights; nothing to walk to.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown and Ghent are fine by day and on busy nights; the real risks are summer heat, poor road signage off the interstates and quiet blocks after dark. Use rideshare at night rather than walking alone.
  • Summer heat and humidity: heat indices around 34°C by day, higher in heat waves.
  • Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64) can back up 40–50 min; use I-664 and the Monitor-Merrimac crossing instead.
  • Riding the Tide without a valid ticket carries a $250 fine; buy at station machines.
  • Naval Station Norfolk public tours have been suspended — check before planning around them.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet at night; stick to Granby Street, Waterside and Ghent.
