Get around
Downtown and Ghent are walkable. The Tide light rail runs from the Virginia Beach border through downtown to Sentara, and HRT buses cover the rest; a single ride is $2 and an all-day pass $4.50, valid on buses, the Tide and the Portsmouth ferry. Bring exact change — drivers and ferry crew do not carry cash. Driving is only worth it for Ocean View, the botanical garden or day trips; downtown signage is poor.
