Nashik is a pilgrimage city on the Godavari and India's wine capital, 3–5 h by road or rail from Mumbai. Most travellers use it as a base for Trimbakeshwar and Shirdi, or for a weekend of vineyards. Two nights covers the temples, the ghats and one winery; three if you add Trimbakeshwar and a fort trek.

Getting around

Autos and app cabs cover the city; agree the fare or insist on the meter before you sit. A hired car with driver is the practical choice for Trimbakeshwar, Sula and the forts, since sights sit 10–30 km apart. The Nashik Darshan bus loops the main sights; buy the ticket a day ahead.

Nashik is generally safe for tourists, including solo women in the centre by day. Watch for auto drivers who refuse the meter, pickpockets in crowded temple and market areas, and slick ghat steps in monsoon.
