Friedrichshafen

Give Friedrichshafen one full day for the Zeppelin and Dornier museums plus the lakefront; add a second night only if you want a Zeppelin flight or a bike day.

Friedrichshafen sits on the northeastern corner of Lake Constance and is the town that airships built: Zeppelin and Dornier both started here, and the two museums carry the visit. The centre was rebuilt after 1944 bombing, so the draw is aviation, the long waterfront promenade and the lake itself, not old-town streets. It works as a one-night stop on a Bodensee loop or as a base for the ferry and catamaran crossings to Konstanz and Switzerland.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Friedrichshafen Stadt station, Friedrichshafen Hafen station, the ferry dock and the Zeppelin Museum are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For the Dornier Museum and the airport, take the commuter train to Friedrichshafen Flughafen. Bikes are the local way to cover the long, spread-out shoreline and the lake cycleway; rentals are easy to find. In summer and during trade fairs (Eurobike, Interboot) the B31 and the roads in and out jam badly.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Meersburg

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min by bike

Bike along the lake or car/train west along the shore

Old town on the slope above the lake; the cycleway west is the less pleasant of the two lake routes.

Lindau

go

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h by bike

Bike along the lake cycleway, or train along the shore

The cycleway east is the better ride — it stays off the main road.

Konstanz

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Bodensee catamaran (foot passengers and cyclists only)

Fastest lake crossing; Konstanz station is close to the catamaran dock for onward trains.

Romanshorn (Switzerland)

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car ferry across the lake

Express trains to Zürich, Lucerne and Bern from the Swiss side; last off-season crossing around 19:30.

Ravensburg

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train north, or commuter train from the airport station

Medieval centre and towers; easy half-day.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre / Bahnhofstraße

Walk to both train stations, the ferry dock, the Zeppelin Museum and the promenade; best for a one-night stop with bags.

Hafen and waterfront

Ferry terminal, Moleturm viewing tower and the Beach Club on the doorstep; quieter at night.

Near the airport / exhibition centre

Dornier Museum, Zeppelin flight departures and the trade fair; 4–5 km (2.5–3.1 mi) from the centre, so you need the train or a car.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime lake town; the real risks are lake swimming outside the supervised Strandbad season, bikes on the promenade and heavy summer traffic on the B31.
  • Summer and trade-fair weeks bring heavy traffic on the B31; allow extra time if you drive.
  • Summer trains along the lake fill with cyclists and their bikes.
  • The last ferry to Romanshorn in the off-season leaves around 19:30 — do not plan a late crossing.
  • Zeppelin flights are weather-dependent and sell out; book ahead and keep a spare day.
  • Museum opening hours change between summer and winter — check before you go.
