Give Friedrichshafen one full day for the Zeppelin and Dornier museums plus the lakefront; add a second night only if you want a Zeppelin flight or a bike day.
Friedrichshafen sits on the northeastern corner of Lake Constance and is the town that airships built: Zeppelin and Dornier both started here, and the two museums carry the visit. The centre was rebuilt after 1944 bombing, so the draw is aviation, the long waterfront promenade and the lake itself, not old-town streets. It works as a one-night stop on a Bodensee loop or as a base for the ferry and catamaran crossings to Konstanz and Switzerland.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Friedrichshafen Stadt station, Friedrichshafen Hafen station, the ferry dock and the Zeppelin Museum are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For the Dornier Museum and the airport, take the commuter train to Friedrichshafen Flughafen. Bikes are the local way to cover the long, spread-out shoreline and the lake cycleway; rentals are easy to find. In summer and during trade fairs (Eurobike, Interboot) the B31 and the roads in and out jam badly.
