Zakopane
Go for 2–3 nights as a mountain base: hike or ski by day, Krupówki in the evening. Skip if you want a quiet town or hate crowds.
Zakopane is Poland's main mountain resort, at about 800–1,000 m inside the Tatra National Park, 2–3.5 h by train or bus from Kraków. Two to three nights covers the Gubałówka funicular, one serious hike (Morskie Oko or Kasprowy Wierch) and the wooden-villa streets. It is a year-round town: hiking June–October, skiing January–March. It is busy, and the tourist strip has real overcharging and fake-listing problems, so book ahead and check the bill.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Krupówki to the railway station is about 10 minutes on foot. Minibuses and private vans run fixed routes to trailheads and ski lifts, leaving when full, from around the station; pay the driver in cash. Local buses and taxis cover the rest. A car is a liability in the centre in high season — parking is scarce and expensive.

Watch out
Safety
- Fake accommodation listings are common, especially around Christmas and New Year: book on a platform with a real address and pay by card, not by transfer.
- Some restaurants add small fees (music, service, toilet, parking) that can add about 20% to the bill: read the menu and ask before ordering.
- On Krupówki, costumed photo touts can demand money (often around 50 zł) after a photo; you are not obliged to pay, and licensed ones are cheaper.
- Fake oscypek is sold under near-identical names; real oscypek starts with 'o', is a double-pyramid shape and is made from sheep milk, May–September.
- Mountain weather changes fast: hail and cold snaps are possible in midsummer, and thunderstorms are dangerous above the tree line. Carry waterproofs and water.
- Stay on marked trails in the national park; there is an entry fee and rescue above the trails is expensive.
