Rota

Rota is for travellers who want the quietest of the main Northern Marianas: 2–3 nights for reefs, latte quarries and empty roads. A day-trip from Saipan is tight but possible with the early flight.

Rota is the least developed of the three main Northern Mariana Islands, with a population of about 3,300. Its appeal is solitude: clear water for diving, ancient latte stone quarries, and a pace that makes Saipan feel like a city. Most visitors come for 2–3 nights; a day-trip from Saipan works if you take the first flight and the last one back.

Rules in force · 6
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Micronesia ↗Micronesia runs on a handful of weekly flights, so one cancellation can cost several days: build slack into every connection between islands.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗US entry rules apply: a US visa, ESTA, or eligibility for the Guam–CNMI Visa Waiver Program. Check US Customs and Border Protection for your passport, and note that the Guam–CNMI waiver does not allow travel on to the rest of the US.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗The CNMI runs its own customs and quarantine check: declare food, plants and animal products on arrival.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗Second World War sites (Banzai Cliff, Tinian's North Field) are memorials; do not remove relics or climb on structures.

Getting around

Rent a car at the airport (Islander Rent-A-Car is the only counter). The main road is paved; avoid the southern 'highway' 100 between Sinapalo and Songsong unless you have a 4×4. Waving at oncoming cars is local custom.

Watch out

Safety

Rota is very safe, comparable to Saipan. The main risks are driving on unsealed roads and limited medical facilities: carry a basic first-aid kit.
  • The southern road (highway 100) is a narrow farm track, not a proper road: do not take a standard rental car there.
  • Flights are small and can be cancelled in bad weather; have a buffer day if your schedule is tight.
  • No ATM on the island: bring enough USD cash for your stay.
  • Restaurant hours are limited; check ahead for dinner.
