San Cristóbal

Give San Cristóbal 3 nights: 2 for Puerto Baquerizo Moreno's free wildlife walks and 1 for a Kicker Rock boat day. Skip it if you only have 3 Galápagos days.

San Cristóbal is the Galápagos island where the wildlife comes to town: sea lions sleep on the pier benches at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and the airport is a 15-minute walk from the waterfront. It suits travellers who want a small, walkable base plus one or two boat days, not a full cruise itinerary. Three nights covers the free land sites and Kicker Rock; add a night if you want diving or a highlands loop.

  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Ecuador ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an Ecuadorian consulate.
  • Ecuador ↗The Galápagos has its own entry controls: a transit control card bought at the airport before departure, a national park entrance fee, and inspections for food and plants. Check official Galápagos rules before booking.
  • Ecuador ↗Several coastal provinces (including Guayas, where Guayaquil is) are under official warnings and periodic states of emergency; read your government's advice before routing through them.

Getting around

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is walkable end to end in 20–30 minutes. Taxis are white pickups: $1 anywhere in town, and fixed board prices for El Progreso, El Junco, La Galapaguera and Puerto Chino (check the board at the tourist pier). A taxi for the three highlands sites with about an hour at each runs about $70; a one-way run to Puerto Chino about $40–50, so split it. Inter-island speedboats to Santa Cruz take about 2 h and cost about $35 one-way, morning out and afternoon back.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kicker Rock (León Dormido)

go

Door to door: Half day to a full day

Guided boat from the tourist pier, about 30–40 min each way, with snorkel stops

Book a day ahead at the pier; open-water snorkelling, so go with a licensed operator and a wetsuit.

Isla Lobos

go

Door to door: Half day

Guided boat, often combined with Kicker Rock

Sea lion colony and nesting birds; calm, shallow water makes it the easier snorkel day.

El Junco, La Galapaguera and Puerto Chino

go

Door to door: Full day

Taxi or collectivo on the one highland road, about 45 min to the lake

About $70 for the taxi loop with an hour at each site; Puerto Chino has no facilities and no return taxis.

Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora)

overnight

Door to door: About 3 h

Public speedboat from the pier, about 2 h

Morning boats out, afternoon boats back; rough and noisy, so plan it as a move, not a day return.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno waterfront (Malecón / Av. Charles Darwin)

Walk to the pier, restaurants and Playa Mann; sea lions share the beach. Best for a short stay with no car.

Inland Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

Two or three blocks back from the Malecón: cheaper rooms, quieter nights, still under 10 minutes on foot to the pier.

El Progreso (highlands)

Cooler, greener village on the road to El Junco and Puerto Chino; only worth it if you have your own transport or a driver.

Watch out

Safety

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is small and calm, and the main risks are natural: strong currents at Las Tijeretas and Kicker Rock, sun and dehydration, and sea lions that bite if you get between them and the water. Keep 2 m back, never swim alone, and lock valuables in your room.
  • Galápagos National Park rules: a licensed guide is required for most visitor sites, and groups over eight need one; never touch or feed wildlife.
  • The Kicker Rock crossing is open-water: swell and current make it unsuitable for weak swimmers or first-time snorkellers.
  • Puerto Chino has no facilities, no taxis waiting and poor mobile signal; arrange your return before you go.
  • Bring insect repellent for horseflies at Puerto Chino and the highlands.
  • Cash is preferred in small shops and for transport; ATMs are few and may not take your card.
  • Do not buy souvenirs made from local natural materials: it is illegal under Galápagos law.
