San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is the Galápagos island where the wildlife comes to town: sea lions sleep on the pier benches at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and the airport is a 15-minute walk from the waterfront. It suits travellers who want a small, walkable base plus one or two boat days, not a full cruise itinerary. Three nights covers the free land sites and Kicker Rock; add a night if you want diving or a highlands loop.

Get around
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is walkable end to end in 20–30 minutes. Taxis are white pickups: $1 anywhere in town, and fixed board prices for El Progreso, El Junco, La Galapaguera and Puerto Chino (check the board at the tourist pier). A taxi for the three highlands sites with about an hour at each runs about $70; a one-way run to Puerto Chino about $40–50, so split it. Inter-island speedboats to Santa Cruz take about 2 h and cost about $35 one-way, morning out and afternoon back.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; women often one cheek kiss; avoid: Skipping the greeting before a question
- Time: Allow for 'hora ecuatoriana' socially; avoid: Assuming tours leave late — they do not
- Photos: Ask people first; avoid: Photographing children without permission
- Dress: Layers in the Andes; avoid: Beachwear in city centres
Scams and watch-outs
- Galápagos National Park rules: a licensed guide is required for most visitor sites, and groups over eight need one; never touch or feed wildlife.
- The Kicker Rock crossing is open-water: swell and current make it unsuitable for weak swimmers or first-time snorkellers.
- Puerto Chino has no facilities, no taxis waiting and poor mobile signal; arrange your return before you go.
- Bring insect repellent for horseflies at Puerto Chino and the highlands.
- Cash is preferred in small shops and for transport; ATMs are few and may not take your card.
- Do not buy souvenirs made from local natural materials: it is illegal under Galápagos law.
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is small and calm, and the main risks are natural: strong currents at Las Tijeretas and Kicker Rock, sun and dehydration, and sea lions that bite if you get between them and the water. Keep 2 m back, never swim alone, and lock valuables in your room.
