Gorey is a market town of about 11,500 in north County Wexford, 90 km south of Dublin and 41 km north of Wexford town. The M11 bypass took the traffic out in 2007, so Main Street is now walkable, and the town works as a rail and bus stop between Dublin and the Rosslare ferries. Its real draw is the coast: Courtown and Riverchapel are 7–8 km east, and the golf, beach and caravan country sits there. One night covers it; two if you want the beach and a day trip.

Getting around

Gorey town centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Bus 879 runs Gorey–Courtown–Riverchapel in 15 min: hourly in summer, only three services Monday–Saturday the rest of the year, so check the timetable before relying on it. Trains and buses both stop in town; taxis cover the gaps.

Safety

Gorey is a low-crime market town and the main risks are practical: unlit roads and no footpath between town and Courtown, wet coastal weather, and cold water at the beach. Use 112 or 999 for police, ambulance, fire or coast guard.
  • Bus 879 to Courtown drops to three services a day outside summer: check the timetable or take a taxi.
  • Caravan parks along the Courtown coast are for static units on long lets, not short stays.
  • Marlfield House closes for part of the winter (open Feb–Dec): check dates if you are booking around it.
  • The M11 bypass means you need a car or the bus for Courtown, Tara Hill and Craanford; none are walkable from town.
