Calbayog

Spend 1–2 days in Calbayog to see its waterfalls, cathedral and central plaza; longer stays only for remote nature hikes.

Calbayog, a city of about 180 000 on Samar, sits on the Maharlika Highway and offers a cluster of waterfalls, a historic cathedral and a modest waterfront. The sights are spread out, so a full day covers the main attractions; a second day lets you reach the farther falls or take a short trip to nearby Catbalogan. Public transport is limited to tricycles and occasional buses, so keep travel times in mind.

Watch out

Safety

Calbayog is generally safe for tourists; petty theft can occur in crowded markets, so keep valuables secure and avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas.
  • Ferry and bus schedules may change during the rainy season – confirm times before travel.
  • Roads to remote waterfalls can be muddy after rain; allow extra walking time.
  • Typhoon season (Jul–Oct) can cause flight and ferry cancellations.
