Oroville is a Gold Rush town in the Sierra Nevada foothills and the seat of Butte County, about an hour north of Sacramento on Highway 70. The town itself is small and quiet; the draw is the tallest dam in the United States, the lake it created, and spring wildflower hikes on Table Mountain. Most visitors come for outdoor time, not for a city break, and almost all of them arrive by car.

A car is close to essential: sights are spread along Highway 70 and up Highway 162, and taxis are scarce and pricey. B-Line buses cover the town core and run hourly to neighbouring towns. Downtown is walkable on its own. Bicycling works in spring and autumn on the Green Line Trail toward the dam.
