- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Mount Carmel Junction is a crossroads, not a town: US-89 meets the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway (UT-9) about 12 mi east of Zion National Park's east entrance. There is no public transport and almost nothing to see in the junction itself. It earns its place as a bed base for Zion's quieter east side, for the slot canyons and White Cliffs of Grand Staircase–Escalante, and as a break on the Zion–Bryce–Grand Canyon loop. Come with a car, come with a plan, and treat the junction as a place to sleep and eat between park days.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Private car only. There is no public transport, no shuttle and no rideshare worth counting on out here. Fuel up in Kanab, Panguitch or Springdale before you arrive. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway through the park stays open, but vehicles over a set size (RVs, trailers, buses) need the tunnel escort, which runs 08:00–20:00 — outside those hours large vehicles cannot pass. Expect deer and free-range cattle on US-89 at dusk.

Safety
- No public transport and thin cell coverage between towns: download offline maps before you leave.
- Summer heat and afternoon monsoon storms: slot canyons flood fast — never enter one with rain in the forecast, even miles away.
- The Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel escort for large vehicles runs 08:00–20:00 only; oversized rigs cannot pass outside it.The Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel escort for large vehicles runs 8:00 AM–8:00 PM only; oversized rigs cannot pass outside it.

- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Zion east entrance, tunnel escort hours, Bryce, North Rim, Coral Pink Sand Dunes) and eat pages with last orders.
- Storm and heat fixtures so slot-canyon days can go red before a reader drives out.
