Auburn is a college town of about 60,000 built around Auburn University, in the River Heritage region of east Alabama. Downtown and the campus are walkable and close together; everything else — Chewacla State Park, the golf courses, the interstate hotels — needs a car. The town is quiet most of the year and floods with alumni on home football weekends, when hotel prices jump and rooms sell out months ahead.

Getting around
Downtown and campus are walkable and drivers usually stop for pedestrians at crossings. Outside that core — South College, Wire Road, the parks — there are few sidewalks, so plan on a car, a bike or a taxi. Bikes are common and the city has bike lanes and paths; riding on the sidewalk can get you a citation. TigerTransit buses are for students and staff only. Lee-Russell Public Transit is dial-a-ride and must be booked at least one business day ahead.
