Cairns is a small tropical city of about 150,000 people that works as a launch pad, not a sightseeing city. Almost everything worth doing — the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree, Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands — is a day trip or an overnight from here. The city centre is walkable in 20 minutes, there is no real swimming beach in town, and the free Esplanade lagoon replaces it. Come for the reef and the rainforest; stay 4 nights, more if you dive.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable; the Esplanade, lagoon, reef terminal and most hostels sit within 20 minutes on foot. Kinetic buses run about 20 routes from the Lake Street and Shields Street terminal; tickets are very cheap (about A$0.50 a trip, A$1 a day). A car is needed for the northern beaches, Botanic Gardens and Tablelands unless you book tours. Trains: Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Spirit of Queensland from Cairns station in the city centre.

Safety
- Stinger season roughly Oct–May: swim only inside netted enclosures or the lagoon, never at open beaches.
- Saltwater crocodiles live in creeks, rivers and some beaches around Cairns — obey all warning signs.
- Cyclones are possible Dec–Apr; check forecasts and have a plan if flights are cancelled.
- Reef trips and liveaboards sell out in the June–August peak and the first two weeks of July school holidays — book ahead.
