Kuranda is a small rainforest village 34 km and 329 m above Cairns, reached by the Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. The village and its markets are busiest around the middle of the day when tour groups arrive (check current crowd patterns). Most travellers do it as a day trip; one night is enough if you want the markets and wildlife parks without the crowd.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, though it is hilly and crowded at midday. A courtesy bus links the Skyrail and railway stations at the south end with the wildlife parks at the north end roughly every 20 minutes; most people walk it. A car helps for Barron Falls and the gorge lookouts.

Watch out

Safety

Kuranda is a small, safe tourist village. The real risks are the wet-season heat and storms, steep and slippery rainforest tracks, and missing the last train or cable car.
  • The Skyrail carries no luggage at all, and the train only what fits in the carriage rack: not suitable if you are moving with bags.
  • The last train and cable car leave mid-afternoon; miss them and you are paying for a road transfer or a taxi.
  • The train carriages are not air-conditioned.
  • Barron Falls is a trickle in the dry season and a torrent after heavy rain: set expectations by season.
  • In the wet season (roughly Nov–Apr) the railway and cableway can close for weather or maintenance: check the operator's site the day before.
