Chiang Rai is the capital of Thailand's far north, a compact service town of about 70,000 people and the base for the Golden Triangle border region where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. The city itself is walkable and low-key; the famous sights — White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House — sit outside it, so most travellers use Chiang Rai as a two-night base with a hired car, a tour or a motorbike. Food here is spicier than Chiang Mai's and the hill-tribe mix is stronger.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk, including to the Blue Temple. Tuk-tuks, songthaews and Grab cover longer hops; Grab is cheap and avoids haggling. For the White Temple, Black House, Doi Tung and the Golden Triangle, a rental car, a motorbike or a day tour is the practical choice — public buses reach the White Temple but not the rest comfortably.

Watch out

Safety

Chiang Rai is calm and low-crime; the real risks are scooter accidents, the Feb–Apr smoke season and unlicensed tours to hill-tribe villages — book through a licensed operator.
  • Burning season roughly Feb–Apr: air quality can be bad enough to change plans; check AQI before booking.
  • Metered taxis at the airport often refuse the meter — use the pre-paid desk or Grab.
  • Songthaew drivers between the two bus stations may ask more than the posted fare when the vehicle is half empty; wait for the next one.
  • Motorbike rental: check the bike, wear a helmet and confirm your travel insurance covers scooters.
  • Border areas near Mae Sai and the Mekong: carry your passport and check current crossing rules.
