Chiang Saen was a Lanna capital before Chiang Rai existed, then a ghost town for a century. What is left is a small river town on the Mekong with a walled core of brick chedis, a good museum and cheap riverside food. It is 60 km from Chiang Rai and pairs with the Golden Triangle and Chiang Khong, not with a rushed return the same day.

Getting around

The town is walkable: the bus stop, riverfront and old city sit within about 2 km. For Wat Phra That Pha Ngao (4 km) and Chiang Saen Lake (about 7 km) take a songthaew, a rented scooter or a bicycle. Agree the songthaew fare before you get in.

The Lao border crossing at Huay Xai; no regular public bus from Chiang Saen, so arrange the boat or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Chiang Saen is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the last bus leaving without you, smoke in Feb–Apr, and scooter riding on the 1016 (≈ US$35) with local traffic.
  • Buses to Chiang Rai leave when reasonably full; the last useful departure is mid-afternoon, so do not plan a late return.
  • No regular public transport south to Chiang Khong: ask locally or charter a boat or car.
  • Burning-season smoke from Feb to Apr can cut visibility and air quality; check the air before you commit.
  • Some riverside bars and karaoke places run loud until about 22:00; ask for a room away from the bar.
  • Border areas along the Mekong: stay on the Thai side unless you hold a visa for Laos or Myanmar.
