Takaka

Base in Takaka 2 nights for Waikoropupu Springs and Wainui; Farewell Spit is reached via Collingwood by organised tour only, 1 h 40 min over Takaka Hill from Nelson.

Takaka is the hub of Golden Bay, at the northwest corner of the South Island. It is small, seasonal and quiet, with the clearest freshwater springs in the country, a national park on its doorstep and the road to Farewell Spit. Two nights is the useful minimum; three lets you add a full day in Abel Tasman without rushing the hill road.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

You need a car. Rental cars are available in Takaka town and at Takaka Aerodrome. Golden Bay Coachlines runs Nelson–Takaka services; local buses are limited, so plan around your own vehicle. Takaka Hill has roughly 250 bends: allow 1 h 40 min from Nelson and take it slowly in rain or with a campervan.

Waikoropupu Springs

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive from Takaka, about 10 min, then a short walk

Very clear spring water; viewing platforms only, no swimming or touching the water.

Abel Tasman National Park (Wainui entrance)

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min to the Wainui trailhead

Drive via Pohara and Abel Tasman Drive to Wainui, then walk or take a water taxi

Wainui is the Takaka-side entrance; Marahau is on the Nelson side and is a much longer drive from Takaka. Book water taxis ahead in summer.

Collingwood and Farewell Spit

go

Door to door: About 45 min to Collingwood, plus the tour

Drive north about 30 min to Collingwood, then join an organised tour for the spit

Farewell Spit access is by organised tour only; allow the drive plus tour time and check times and tides.

Onekaka

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Drive about 17 km (11 mi) past Takaka

Mussel Inn for food, drink and music; a glow-worm trail is across the road.

Nelson

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 40 min

Drive over Takaka Hill, or Golden Bay Coachlines

Doable as a day trip but the hill road makes it a long one; better as a transfer.

Watch out

Safety

Takaka is a small, safe town; the real risks are the winding hill road, weather changes in the national park and limited services in winter. Tell someone your plan before remote walks.
  • Takaka Hill is a slow, winding road with few places to pass; add time in rain or with a campervan.
  • Many cafés, tours and accommodation close or cut hours in winter (Jun–Aug).
  • Fuel up in Takaka or Motueka; stations are sparse further north.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the hill and toward Farewell Spit.
  • Sandflies near the coast and springs; bring repellent.
