Takaka
Base in Takaka 2 nights for Waikoropupu Springs and Wainui; Farewell Spit is reached via Collingwood by organised tour only, 1 h 40 min over Takaka Hill from Nelson.
Takaka is the hub of Golden Bay, at the northwest corner of the South Island. It is small, seasonal and quiet, with the clearest freshwater springs in the country, a national park on its doorstep and the road to Farewell Spit. Two nights is the useful minimum; three lets you add a full day in Abel Tasman without rushing the hill road.

- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Takaka Hill is a slow, winding road with few places to pass; add time in rain or with a campervan.
- Many cafés, tours and accommodation close or cut hours in winter (Jun–Aug).
- Fuel up in Takaka or Motueka; stations are sparse further north.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the hill and toward Farewell Spit.
- Sandflies near the coast and springs; bring repellent.
Takaka is a small, safe town; the real risks are the winding hill road, weather changes in the national park and limited services in winter. Tell someone your plan before remote walks.
