Shkodër is Albania's northern hub, 2 h by bus from Tirana and the last real city before the Albanian Alps. The old town is compact and flat, so you cover it by bike or on foot in a day. Most travellers use it as a staging post for Theth, Valbona or the Koman lake ferry, and that is the right call: the city itself is a half-day of sights plus a good dinner.

Getting around

The centre is flat and small: everything from the square to the castle gate is walkable. Shkodër is Albania's cycling city, with marked lanes and rentals around 500 lek a day, which is the fastest way to Rozafa, the Buna bridge and the lake path. City buses exist but are infrequent; taxis are cheap for short hops. There is no single bus station: buses and furgons leave from separate points around the centre, so ask your guesthouse which corner to stand on.

Fish restaurants on the water. Carp in a clay pot (tave krapi) needs hours of cooking: order a day ahead.

Theth and the Albanian Alps

Quieter guesthouses a few minutes east of the square; cheaper doubles, still walkable to dinner.

Shirokë and Zogaj (lake shore)

Village guesthouses and fish restaurants on Lake Shkodra, 5–8 km west. Only worth it if you have a car, bike or don't mind a taxi back.

Watch out

Safety

Shkodër is a low-crime city and the centre is fine on foot after dark. The real risks are unlit pavements, fast traffic on the ring roads, summer heat at the castle and unlicensed taxis at night: agree the fare or use a meter.
  • Buses and furgons have no central station and often leave when full: confirm the departure point and time the day before.
  • Street names were changed and old names are reused elsewhere, so paper maps and older guides mislead; use an offline map with GPS.
  • Rozafa castle sits on a hill 2 km out with no reliable taxi rank at the gate: arrange a return or walk back down.
  • Summer afternoons hit the high 30s °C; do the castle before 10:00 and keep water with you.
  • The Lead Mosque below the castle has been closed to visitors: check before walking out for it.
