Luton

Treat Luton as an airport, not a destination: land, sleep one night if your flight is early, and be in London in 32–45 min by train.

Luton is a town of about 200,000 people 35 miles north of London, and almost everyone who comes here is passing through London Luton Airport. The town itself has two good free museums, a football club and a large South Asian quarter around Bury Park, but its real value to a traveller is as a cheap bed and a fast rail link to London, Bedford and the Midlands. One night is enough unless you are using it as a base for the Chilterns and Dunstable Downs.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; Arriva Bus A runs every 15 min between the airport, Luton station (about 15 min) and Dunstable (about 30 min). Luton has three railway stations: Luton (town centre), Luton Airport Parkway (for the airport via the DART) and Leagrave. Thameslink and East Midlands Railway serve all three; contactless and Oyster-style tap-in works on the London route.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (around Luton station and The Mall)

Best for a train-based stop: walk to Luton station, buses and the Arndale market.

Airport and Airport Parkway

Best for an early flight or a late arrival; nothing else to do on foot.

Bury Park

Cheap eats and shops, 15–20 min walk northwest of the centre; livelier and noisier at night.

Leagrave

North of town on the Thameslink line; quieter, useful if you are heading to Bedford.

Watch out

Safety

Luton is an ordinary British town, not a dangerous one: the real risks are late-night drinking crowds between midnight and 4am, football rivalry shirts, and airport rip-offs on exchange rates.
  • Do not walk alone between midnight and 4am; town-centre drinking crowds look for fights, and licensed taxis are the safe way home.
  • Do not wear Watford or Millwall football shirts in Luton, especially on Saturdays or at night: it draws verbal abuse and can escalate.
  • Airport exchange kiosks do not display rates and are well off the official rate; change money in town or use a card.
  • Airport 'duty-free' spirits can cost more than a UK supermarket; compare before you buy.
  • Mobile and Wi-Fi coverage inside the terminal is patchy: keep a printed or offline boarding pass.
  • Luton's tourist information point is in Dunstable, about 5 miles away, so do not plan on a town-centre office.
