Luton
Treat Luton as an airport, not a destination: land, sleep one night if your flight is early, and be in London in 32–45 min by train.
Luton is a town of about 200,000 people 35 miles north of London, and almost everyone who comes here is passing through London Luton Airport. The town itself has two good free museums, a football club and a large South Asian quarter around Bury Park, but its real value to a traveller is as a cheap bed and a fast rail link to London, Bedford and the Midlands. One night is enough unless you are using it as a base for the Chilterns and Dunstable Downs.

Get around
The centre is walkable; Arriva Bus A runs every 15 min between the airport, Luton station (about 15 min) and Dunstable (about 30 min). Luton has three railway stations: Luton (town centre), Luton Airport Parkway (for the airport via the DART) and Leagrave. Thameslink and East Midlands Railway serve all three; contactless and Oyster-style tap-in works on the London route.
