Break a Baku–Tbilisi overland trip with one night in Ganja for its restored old bazaar and Nizami-era sites; skip it if you're flying directly between the two capitals.
Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city, an old Silk Road town on the road and rail route toward Georgia, and the home town of the medieval poet Nizami Ganjavi. Its restored historic centre runs along Javad Khan pedestrian street, past the 17th-century Shah Abbas (Juma) Mosque and a small canal, the Ganjachay. Most visitors pass through it as a stop between Baku and Tbilisi rather than a destination in itself.
