Fort Saskatchewan is a small city of about 25,000 on the North Saskatchewan River, 25 km northeast of Edmonton, and the gateway to Elk Island National Park. Its draw is a compact heritage precinct and river-valley trails; the surrounding industrial heartland is not a sightseeing area. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a cheaper bed near Edmonton.
