Base here instead of Niagara Falls: 1 night for the canal locks and Port Dalhousie, or 2 nights if you add wineries and the Merritt Trail.
St. Catharines is the working city of the Niagara Peninsula, 20 minutes from Niagara Falls and 25 from Niagara-on-the-Lake, with cheaper beds and better-value food than either. The draw is the Welland Canal and its ship lifts, the old canal ruins along the Merritt Trail, and Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario. Two nights covers it; one night works if you are passing through.
