  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Athens is a college town of about 115,000 people, built around the University of Georgia and a compact downtown of bars, music rooms and restaurants. Most of what a visitor wants sits within a 20-minute walk of College Avenue. It is a two-night stop on a Georgia road trip, not a destination week, and it is at its busiest and most expensive on home football weekends.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown and the UGA campus are walkable; the rest of the city is not. Athens Transit buses run Mon–Fri about 6:00–21:45 and weekends about 7:00–23:00, with on-demand evening service (check current fares and app). UGA buses link campus, downtown and Milledge Avenue. A car helps for the Botanical Garden, Sandy Creek and the flea market; rideshare covers nights out.

Watch out

Safety

Athens is a normal US college town: daytime downtown and campus are easy, and the main issues are late-night bar crowds, drink spiking and unlit streets away from the centre. Use rideshare after midnight and keep to lit blocks.
  • Home football weekends fill every bed and double room rates; book months ahead or avoid the dates.
  • Downtown bar streets get crowded and loud late on weekends; watch your drink and your phone.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real: plan indoor stops in the middle of the day.
  • Outside downtown and campus, pavements are patchy — drive or take a rideshare after dark.
