Randers
Give Randers one night, or a half-day stop between Aarhus and Aalborg: the river, the tropical zoo and the Elvis museum fill a day, not a week.
Randers sits where Denmark's longest river, the Gudenå, meets the fjord, on the E45 between Aarhus and Aalborg. The compact, partly pedestrianised centre is walkable in 30 minutes end to end, and the draw is a cluster of small, specific sights: a tropical zoo, an Elvis replica mansion, two free museums and river-meadow nature parks. It works as a single night or a half-day rail stop, not a base.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
- Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
- Denmark ↗Denmark is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; Greenland and the Faroe Islands have separate entry arrangements.
- Denmark ↗Bike lanes are busy fast lanes: do not walk or stand in them, and signal before you stop if you cycle.
- Denmark ↗Denmark is close to cashless: cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, even for small amounts.

Getting around
Walk: the centre is compact and largely pedestrianised, 30 min covers most of it. Free city-bikes are picked up at five spots in the inner city, including the station and bus terminal, but expect a large deposit and card friction for foreign cards. Local yellow buses and taxis cover the outlying sights; the E45 and regional trains link the region.

Train and bus terminal, the tropical zoo and the Gudenå path on the doorstep.
South of the river (Dronningborg, Memphis Mansion side)
Quieter, needs a bike or bus; only worth it if the Elvis museum is your main stop.
