Milton Keynes

Give Milton Keynes one full day for Bletchley Park plus a half-day for the centre; two nights if you want Willen Lake or Stony Stratford too.

Milton Keynes is a 1960s planned new town in Buckinghamshire, 35–40 min by train from London Euston. It is not a classic sightseeing city: the draw is Bletchley Park, the codebreaking museum, plus the National Museum of Computing next door, the concrete cows, Willen Lake and the older villages of Stony Stratford and Wolverton that the new town absorbed. Most visitors come for one specific reason and stay one or two nights.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The city is built around cars: main roads run in a grid of numbered H and V roads with roundabouts, and the roads look alike, so use a map. Buses are frequent from most estates to the centre, the station and Bletchley. Pedestrians and cyclists have the 'redways', red-tarmac paths that follow the grid but cross it by bridges and underpasses; they are poorly signposted and easy to get lost on. Taxis and rideshare work from the station and the centre.

Central Milton Keynes (around the station and Centre:MK)

Chain hotels, shopping and the theatre district; best if you are arriving by train and leaving by train.

Stony Stratford

Old market town on the western edge; pubs, independent shops and river walks. About 10 min by car from the centre.

Bletchley

South of the centre, next to Bletchley Park and Bletchley railway station; useful if the museum is your main reason for coming.

Wolverton

North of the centre, its own railway station on the slow line, and the Craufurd Arms live-music pub.

Watch out

Safety

Milton Keynes is a normal, low-risk English town; the real hazards are traffic on the grid roads and redway crossings, plus getting lost on the redways. Take the usual city precautions at night in the centre.
  • The redways are not well signposted; carry a map or use a phone app.
  • Redways cross minor roads at grade in places: watch for traffic, especially with children.
  • Grid roads all look similar; drivers new to the town get lost easily.
  • Rush hour congests the grid roads and the M1 junctions.
  • Bletchley Park tickets are annual passes, not single-day tickets: check current prices and opening days on the official site before you travel.
