Vaals is the southeasternmost corner of the Netherlands, a small town of about 9,600 people where the Dutch, Belgian and German borders meet at the Drielandenpunt. It has no train station, so most visitors arrive by bus from Aachen, Maastricht or Heerlen. The town works as a half-day or full-day stop for the tripoint, the Vaalserberg and the surrounding hills; the villages of Vijlen, Lemiers and Holset reward a car or an e-bike.

Getting around

The old centre is walkable. The Drielandenpunt is about 4 km uphill from the centre — bus 149 (Panoramalijn) runs weekends and holidays, hourly, roughly 11:00–17:00. For Vijlen, Lemiers and Holset you need a car, bike or e-bike; the region is hillier than the rest of the Netherlands. E-bikes can be reserved through several hotels, campings and cafés in the area.

Watch out

Safety

Vaals is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are traffic on the N281 through the centre, steep and slippery paths on the Vaalserberg after rain, and leaving bags visible in a parked car at the Drielandenpunt car park.
  • No train station in Vaals: arrive by bus from Aachen, Maastricht or Heerlen, or drive.
  • Taxis from Heerlen or Maastricht are expensive — count on at least €60 (≈ US$70) from Heerlen.
  • Bus 149 to the Drielandenpunt runs weekends and holidays only, hourly, roughly 11:00–17:00.
  • The tripoint is a 4 km uphill walk from town; allow 1 h each way on foot.
  • Many restaurants and museums close on Mondays or in winter; check before you go.
