Soharصحار

Stop in Sohar only if driving between Muscat and the UAE border, or if you have a specific interest in its trading-port history: it has a fort, corniche and beaches, but little to hold a dedicated stay.

Sohar is a port city on Oman's Batinah coast, long associated with the medieval Indian Ocean trade and, in local tradition, the legendary sailor Sindbad. Today it combines a restored fort and corniche with a large modern port and industrial zone. Most visitors pass through en route between Muscat and the United Arab Emirates rather than staying.

Getting around

A rental car is the practical choice, since distances along the Batinah coast are large and public transport is limited; taxis cover the town itself.

Watch out

  • Check current border-crossing rules and required documents if continuing to the UAE.
  • Summer heat and humidity on the coast are intense from June to September.
  • The port and industrial zone dominate part of the coastline; it is not a beach-resort town.
