Kalpetta is the administrative town of Wayanad and the cheapest place to sleep in Kerala, but it is a junction, not a destination: the sights sit 15–25 km out along the ghat roads. Use it as a low-cost base with a hired car or auto, and treat the town itself as a place to eat and sleep between trips to Chembra, Soochippara and the Jain temple at Puliyarmala.

Getting around

Autos charge about ₹15 per km and buses about ₹7 for 3 km; a car with driver runs from roughly ₹1,800 a day. There is no rail link. Most sights are 15–25 km out on ghat roads, so either hire a car for the day or take a local bus to Meppadi, Ambalavayal or Vythiri and walk or auto from there.

Safety

Kalpetta is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are practical: leeches and slick steps on wet trails, monkeys around viewpoints, unlit ghat roads after dark and Maoist activity in remote eastern forests — do not trek alone, and check locally before long routes.
  • Leeches on wet hill trails: carry table salt and wear closed shoes.
  • Monkeys at Lakkidi viewpoint and Pookode Lake: keep windows shut and food out of sight.
  • Night traffic is banned on the Mysore road through the Muthanga forest, so plan daylight crossings.
  • Trekking in remote eastern hills has a history of Maoist incidents; do not walk alone and check locally before long trails.
  • Chembra Peak trekking is closed in monsoon and entry is by permit from the guard house near Meppadi; no permit, no trek.
