MeranoMeran

Give Merano 2 nights: a spa-and-promenade town at 324 m, best Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct, walkable, with Bolzano 33 km (21 mi) and 30–40 min away by train.

Merano (German: Meran) is South Tyrol's second town, about 39,000 people, in a basin ringed by mountains over 3,000 m that block the cold winds. It has been a spa resort since the 1830s, and the town still sells that: promenades along the Passirio, a thermal spa, botanical gardens at Trauttmansdorff, and 50-plus castles in the surrounding hills. Two nights covers the town and one valley; three if you add Merano 2000 or a castle day. It is not a mountain-sports base in the Dolomites sense — the lifts are lower and the town is the point.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Getting around

Walk. The old town, both promenades and the spa are inside 20 minutes on foot. Nine SASA bus lines cover the town roughly 06:00–21:00, one line runs to about 01:00, buses every 15–25 min; stamp your ticket at first use and wave to board, press the button to get off. A chair lift links the town with Tirol village from April to November. Taxis are call-only. Bikes rent at the station, the spa building and the tennis centre, April to mid-October, free with a €5 refundable deposit.

High walks and winter slopes above town; check lift dates and snow.

Dolomites scenery; too far for a comfortable return day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town (Laubengasse and around)

Arcaded main street, cafés and shops at the door; 5–10 min walk from the station. Best for a first short stay.

Along the Passirio promenade

Spa-side hotels and the river walk; quieter, 10–15 min walk to the old town.

Untermais and the station side

Cheaper rooms and easy parking; 15–20 min walk or a short bus ride to the centre.

Hills above town (Tirol, Hafling)

Guesthouses with valley views; chair lift runs April–November, so a car or bus otherwise.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk spa town; the real issues are slippery winter pavements, fast cyclists on the promenades, summer heat in the basin and mountain weather if you go up — carry a layer and check the lift's last descent.
  • Buy and stamp a bus ticket before boarding: inspectors fine €25 (≈ US$30) plus the fare.
  • A single ticket is time-limited — about 45 minutes — so a stop-and-ride needs a new one.
  • Trauttmansdorff gardens and the Touriseum close for the cold season, roughly 1 April to mid-November.
  • The Tirol chair lift does not run in winter.
  • Central parking is hard; leave the car at the hotel or a garage.
  • Winter driving bans on older Euro-class cars apply in the town; check before you drive in.
