Merano
Meran
Give Merano 2 nights: a spa-and-promenade town at 324 m, best Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct, walkable, with Bolzano 33 km and 30–40 min away by train.
Merano (German: Meran) is South Tyrol's second town, about 39,000 people, in a basin ringed by mountains over 3,000 m that block the cold winds. It has been a spa resort since the 1830s, and the town still sells that: promenades along the Passirio, a thermal spa, botanical gardens at Trauttmansdorff, and 50-plus castles in the surrounding hills. Two nights covers the town and one valley; three if you add Merano 2000 or a castle day. It is not a mountain-sports base in the Dolomites sense — the lifts are lower and the town is the point.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Buy and stamp a bus ticket before boarding: inspectors fine €25 plus the fare.
- A single ticket is time-limited — about 45 minutes — so a stop-and-ride needs a new one.
- Trauttmansdorff gardens and the Touriseum close for the cold season, roughly 1 April to mid-November.
- The Tirol chair lift does not run in winter.
- Central parking is hard; leave the car at the hotel or a garage.
- Winter driving bans on older Euro-class cars apply in the town; check before you drive in.
A low-risk spa town; the real issues are slippery winter pavements, fast cyclists on the promenades, summer heat in the basin and mountain weather if you go up — carry a layer and check the lift's last descent.
