Haines Junction is a village of about 600 people at the junction of the Alaska Highway and the Haines Highway, 154 km west of Whitehorse. It is the main gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the last services before the Haines Highway climbs to the Alaska border. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop; two nights if you add a glacier flight or a long hike.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are driving distances, wildlife on the road, fast-changing mountain weather and cold nights even in summer. Carry water, layers and bear spray on trails.
  • Distances are long and fuel is limited: fill up in Haines Junction before heading south on the Haines Highway or west on the Alaska Highway.
  • Cell coverage is patchy outside the village; download offline maps before you leave Whitehorse.
  • Bears and moose are common on the roads at dawn and dusk; slow down and never approach wildlife.
  • Many restaurants and motels cut hours or close from October to April: check opening dates before a winter visit.
  • Summer accommodation books out; walk-in rooms in July and August are not reliable.
