Cambridge, New YorkCambridge
Give Cambridge one night as a Battenkill River and Main Street stop, not a base: two nights only if you paddle or catch a Hubbard Hall show.
Cambridge is a small village and town in Washington County, in the rural northeast of New York's Capital District, about an hour by car from Albany. Main Street has a run of 19th-century brick buildings, Hubbard Hall keeps a working 1878 opera house, and the Battenkill River is the reason most people stop. There is no train and no useful bus: come by car, sleep one night, and treat it as a countryside pause between Albany, Saratoga Springs and Troy.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical answer: US-22 runs north–south through the village and Route 372 (Main Street) runs east–west, with free street parking on Main Street. The countryside, the river put-ins and the neighbouring villages are all a drive away. Walking works only inside the village core.

Watch out
Safety
- No train station and no useful scheduled bus: without a car you are stuck.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads; download offline maps before you leave Albany or Saratoga.
- Winter driving on US-22 and Route 313: snow and ice, and some rural businesses close for the season.
- Restaurant and box-office hours are short and change by season: check before you drive out for dinner.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for ALB: last sensible rental-car pickup, drive time to Cambridge, and a motel fallback if you land late.
- Two walking clusters with anchors: Main Street and Hubbard Hall, and the Route 313 river corridor.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Hubbard Hall box office, Battenkill Valley Outdoors last river trip) and eat pages with last orders.
- Seasonal and hostile-weather fixtures so winter and river-closure states can go green.
