Stolberg is a small Harz resort town of about 1,300 people in southern Saxony-Anhalt, with a compact half-timbered old town, a castle on the hill and a mint museum. It is a walking town, not a sightseeing city: two to three hours covers the centre, and the surrounding forest trails and Joseph's Cross fill a full day. Most travellers see it as a stop between Wernigerode and the Kyffhäuser, or sleep one night to break the drive.

On foot: the old town is small and steep in places, cobbles throughout. Taxis and some hotel bike rental cover the rest. The station sits near the centre, with a connection at Berga-Kelbra to the Halle–Kassel line.

Safety

A very safe small town. The real issues are uneven cobbles, steep lanes, forest trails without phone signal and quiet Sunday evenings: plan dinner and cash ahead.
  • Many shops and restaurants close on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Sundays are quiet: check before you plan a meal.
  • Castle visits need registration by email in advance.
  • Cobbles and slopes: firm shoes, and the walk up to the castle is uphill.
  • Card payment is not universal in small guesthouses: carry some cash.
