Stepanavan sits in the Dzoraget river valley in northern Armenia, cut off from the rest of Lori by high mountains. It is a small town with a Soviet-era main square, a house-museum, and the ruins of Lori Berd, a walled medieval city 4.5 km away. Travellers come for walking, cycling and rafting rather than for the town itself, and most arrive by road from Vanadzor or Yerevan.

Getting around
The town is walkable; taxis handle everything else. Expect roughly 500 dram around town, about 1,000 dram to Lori Berd, and 2,000–2,500 dram return to the Dendropark with an hour of waiting (2026 estimate). No useful city bus network for visitors. For the canyon, monasteries and villages you need a car, a driver or a bike.
