- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
- Northern Territory ↗Climbing Uluru has been illegal since 2019; fines apply.
- Northern Territory ↗Many Aboriginal communities and some Arnhem Land roads need a permit arranged in advance.
- Northern Territory ↗Carry several litres of water per person on any walk or drive; distances between services are long.
- Red Centre ↗Carry at least 4 litres of water per person per day in the vehicle; fuel and towns can be up to 800 km apart on outback highways.
- Red Centre ↗No drinking alcohol in public places in Alice Springs; licensed premises only. Alcohol restrictions apply in Aboriginal communities.
- Red Centre ↗Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park charges an entry fee per person (2026 estimate A$38, valid 3 days); check whether your tour includes it.
- Red Centre ↗Climbing Uluṟu has been banned since 2019.

Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve protects a line of banded sandstone bluffs about 100 km south of Alice Springs, in the arid country between the Stuart Highway and the Finke. The reserve is small and lightly developed: one marked walk, a flat claypan that holds water after rain, free bush camping and a cultural area behind the bluff that is visited only with a Traditional Owner. The catch is access — the last 22 km from the highway is a sandy 4WD track, so the trip is either a 4WD day out or a guided tour, not a stop for a conventional hire car. It pairs naturally with Chambers Pillar and the MacDonnell Ranges on a Red Centre 4WD loop.

Why go
- Sandstone bluffs banded in red, orange and white that glow at first light, with a claypan in front that sometimes holds water and doubles the colour.
- A short, flat walk to Mushroom Rock from the car park — the whole visit fits into two hours.
- Free camping inside the reserve, which makes a sunrise shoot possible without a 4 am drive from Alice Springs.
- Petroglyphs and old occupation sites behind the main bluff, seen on tours run with a Traditional Owner.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The car park, claypan edge and Mushroom Rock walk are flat and firm enough for most visitors with limited mobility.
- There are no sealed paths, handrails or accessible toilets in the reserve.
Visiting lightly
- Take out all rubbish; there are no bins.
- Do not light fires on total fire ban days and keep them small in existing rings.
- Book cultural tours through operators that work with and pay Traditional Owners.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Rainbow Valley?
Nothing. There is no entry fee and no permit for the reserve, and camping is free. The main cost is getting there: a 4WD hire car or a guided day tour from Alice Springs, roughly A$200–350 per person (2026 estimate).
What are the best hikes in Rainbow Valley?
There is only one marked walk, the flat 30–45 minute trail from the car park to Mushroom Rock. Everything else is either the claypan edge in front of the bluff or the cultural area behind it, which you can only visit on a tour with a Traditional Owner.
When is the best time to visit Rainbow Valley?
May to August. Days are mild, mornings are clear and the low sun lights the cliffs best. December to February is too hot for the sandy track and the short walk, and summer storms can leave the claypan and access road flooded.
Can I drive to Rainbow Valley in a 2WD car?
No. The last 22 km from the Stuart Highway is a sandy 4WD track and is not recommended for conventional vehicles. Take a 4WD, or join a tour from Alice Springs.
Can I camp at Rainbow Valley?
Yes, camping is free and there are no bookings. There is no water, power, phone signal or rubbish collection, so bring everything you need and take it out again.
How far is Rainbow Valley from Alice Springs?
About 100 km south, roughly 1.5–2 hours each way: 75 km on the Stuart Highway then 22 km on the sandy access track.
