Hervey Bay is a string of five beachside suburbs — Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan — spread over about 10 km of calm, K'gari-sheltered water. It is not a sightseeing city. It is a launch pad: the whale-watching capital of the east coast from late July to early November, and the shortest ferry hop to K'gari (Fraser Island). Two or three nights covers both, plus the 868 m Urangan Pier and the flat waterfront cycleway. Without a tour booked, one night is enough.

A car is the honest answer: the suburbs are 10 km end to end and buses are thin. Otherwise hire a bike — 18 km of waterfront cycleway runs Urangan to Point Vernon, plus a 6 km inland link path, all flat and off the Esplanade road. Taxis and rideshare cover short hops; the airport run is a few minutes by car.
