Hervey Bay
Give Hervey Bay 2–3 nights: one full day for a K'gari or whale tour, one for the 14 km foreshore path. Skip it outside Jul–Nov unless you are here for K'gari.
Hervey Bay is a string of five beachside suburbs — Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan — spread over about 10 km of calm, K'gari-sheltered water. It is not a sightseeing city. It is a launch pad: the whale-watching capital of the east coast from late July to early November, and the shortest ferry hop to K'gari (Fraser Island). Two or three nights covers both, plus the 868 m Urangan Pier and the flat waterfront cycleway. Without a tour booked, one night is enough.
