- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and its transport hub — a real city with freeways and malls, not a postcard. Most travellers use it to land, buy or rent gear, sleep two nights, then drive south to the Kenai Peninsula or north to Denali. The setting is the draw: Chugach State Park starts at the city's edge and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs from downtown.

Getting around
Downtown is walkable; the rest of the city is spread out and not walkable. People Mover buses cost $2 a ride and $5 a day, with route 40 linking the airport and downtown. A car is the practical choice for anything outside downtown — book it months ahead for June–August, when agencies sell out and rates can pass $200 a day for a large vehicle. The Alaska Railroad depot is downtown at 411 W 1st Ave.

Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips

Turnagain Arm views on the drive; good half-day or an overnight.

Too far for a relaxed return day; sleep one night and see Denali on a clear morning.

The classic next leg: fishing, fjords and the Alaska Railroad back.
Valdez
overnightDoor to door: 5–6 h
Glenn Highway east, about 5–6 h by car
A separate trip, not a day out; consider flying or the ferry.

overnightDoor to door: 7–8 h
Glenn Highway to Chitina, then the McCarthy Road
Long gravel access road; plan at least two nights.
Glennallen
overnightDoor to door: About 4 h
Glenn Highway east, about 3.5–4 h by bus or car
A stop on the Tok–Anchorage bus route, not a day trip.
Cooper Landing
overnightDoor to door: About 2 h
Seward Highway south, about 2 h by car
Kenai River fishing base; sleep over rather than drive back the same night.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown
Best for a first visit without a car: visitor centre at 4th and F, restaurants, railroad depot, coastal trail on foot.
Midtown
Commercial strip south of downtown; cheaper hotels, needs a car or bus for everything.
Spenard
Between Midtown and the airport; some budget motels, but parts of Spenard Road are a red-light district — check the block before booking.
South Anchorage / Dimond
Suburban and residential; only makes sense with a car, close to the Seward Highway exit.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer rental cars sell out mid-June to end of August; reserve early and check your flight lands before the rental desk closes (most shut between 2AM and 3AM).
- Winter roads carry black ice and stud damage; keep extra following distance and headlights on — the Seward Highway south of town requires headlights at all times.
- Spenard Road at night is a red-light district; stay alert and pick your block.
- Downtown is compact and busy in summer with cruise passengers; the city itself is not the Alaska most people picture.

- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage Museum, Flattop trailhead) and eat pages with last orders.
- Summer and winter arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
